What do you imagine the percentage of born-againers who watch this video, believed every word they heard, and agreed with every point that was made?

My guess: 100%

And Christianistas also lack any sense of irony or credulity as well. Both key characteristics of the easily deluded….

right on, except that Hitler wasn’t an Athiest, he was a lifelong Christian. and, frankly, sociologically speaking marxism is what’s called a “secular religion”, so using stalin / mao / etc as examples of athiest leaders is problematic at best.

otherwise right on!

All Caps: Check
Angry Rant: Check
Poor Spelling: Check
Superiority Complex: Check
Completely Hypocritical: Check

Surely you aren’t expressing god’s love by telling us you’ll be “laffing” at us when we’re in hell.

Christians are not a singular group with one set of characteristics. Things like “Christianistas also lack any sense of irony or credulity as well,” are gross generalizations. Fundamentalists? Yes. They are a bit wacky. But in making these generalizations and being dicks across the board, you’re no better than them. John Milton. Soren Kierkegaard. C.S. Lewis. Martin Luther. Those were all legitimately intelligent dudes. Kierkegaard was particularly intelligent. You can go ahead say “Narnia lolz m i rite?” But “Mere Christianity” is a pretty well-reasoned work of (dare I say it?) philosophy. I’m not saying “ACCEPT JESUS INTO YOUR HEART,” because I’m not even on that side of the fence. I’m an agnostic. But the Richard Dawkins school of Atheism is a bit douchebaggish. Fundamentalism may need to be stamped out, but don’t lump everything into a WE R SMART ATHEISTMS / STUPID CHRISTIANS dichotomy. A little courtesy and compassion would be nice.

John, you’re absolutely right, Christians aren’t a singular group with one set of characteristics. They’re a large metastasized societal cancer with many characteristics, the chief of which is to survive at all costs.

Your mention of John Milton, Soren Kierkegaard, C.S. Lewis and Martin Luther as examples of the “intelligence” of those espousing Christianity’s virtues, still does not address my point which is that Christians lack any sense of irony or credulity. Anyone (no matter how intelligent they are reputed to be or have been), who has “objectively” read their bible could not overlook the sense of the ironic of worshipping a so-called loving, yet death-dealing god. Anyone who has read the archaeological/anthropological studies covering the religions of the Egypt, the Levant and Mesopotamia would realize that Christianity is nothing more than the result of syncretism and as such, is not, nor will ever be anything more than the hobbled and slapped together beliefs of the ancients that preceded Jesus as well as the Hebrews by thousands of years.

And obviously for one to buy into any of the Abrahamic storylines, requires a total suspension of belief in the laws of nature. Water to wine, anyone? Therefore a lack of credulity. So I find that no matter how hallowed the name of speaker may be, its still just bullshit.

More to the point, I have no desire nor any requirement to be congenial to this murderous organization, nor any of its supporters. That is in fact a large part of THE PROBLEM. Religionists aren’t the only one’s who engage in cognitive dissonance with their suspension of reality. Atheist (and agnostics) do this as well. We do it when we refuse to call BULLSHIT on the imposition of ancient religious ideas into our reality – in total contradiction to science – as if it were not only true, but as if they have the right to do this! We also do it when we allow our civil liberties to be overwhelmed or subsumed by their ridiculous religious beliefs. And we do it when we are prepared to pay deference to religious gobbledygook by being “civil” and keeping our collective mouths shut, while we would never accept the imposition of other silly beliefs or myths into our lives as if they are true.

If Christians choose to disregard reality, fine. Just leave me out of it. But that’s not possible when Christianity is so enmeshed into the working of the state. Therefore we have an obligation to put religion where it belongs — as far away from the state as possible. Christianity is responsible for more death and destruction of human life than any other singular existing organization, save the institution of government. And even here, religion has always been at its side egging them on. While humanity may indeed require civilizing as we continue on our trek from the muck, religion is not the template for us to use to achieve it.

I am not courteous to liars, cheats, thieves and murderers. If you wish to, go right ahead. I will not. :-|
